The generation of Solid Waste is increasing at an accelerated rate in municipalities of Nepal. At the same time, human health problems associated with rampant disposal of solid wastes are also increasing. The composition of solid waste generated in municipalities of Nepal, is still dominating by organic matter however, KMC records indicate that the solid wastes generated in the municipalities are increasingly containing more plastic materials despite of heavy segregation of plastics that takes place at the source and at the storage and transfer station
Katmandu Municipality alone is producing 300 tons of municipal waste per day and some amount of hazardous medical wastes is also mixed with it. Proper collection of waste from households, storage at transfer station, and segregation at the sources and final disposal at the sanitary landfill sites are the major activities of solid waste management. However, most of the municipalities of Nepal lack the proper management activities resulting into rampant disposal of solid waste into the river and roadside and in the areas of public interest. In addition to this, disposal of hospital waste reportedly has caused public health hazards. Cases of bird's hazards around the airport have also been reported. Pollution problems of contamination of surface and ground water through the percolation of leachate from landfill sites have also experienced in the past. The prolific growth of rodents, insect vectors at the sanitary landfill and storage sites has been frequently reported.
